Good vintage denim earns its keep by working in every season, not just the ones it's usually photographed in. The trick is knowing what to pair it with as the temperature moves.
Spring
Lean into lighter washes and looser fits. A relaxed straight-leg jean pairs well with a simple cotton or linen top and lets the denim itself be the statement rather than competing with heavy layers.
Summer
Cropped or wide-leg vintage fits are the most breathable options for warmer months. Roll a straight-leg hem, add a plain white tee or tank, and let the denim's natural fade do the styling work.
Fall
This is where vintage denim shines. Layer a denim jacket over knitwear, or pair straight-leg jeans with boots and an oversized sweater. Contrasting textures — smooth denim against wool or cable knit — is what makes fall denim outfits feel considered instead of default.
Winter
Choose heavier-weight, darker washes and layer accordingly: a wool coat over a knit, straight or slightly wider-leg jeans that layer well over boots, and darker denim to anchor a monochrome winter palette.
What to look for when buying
- A wash and weight that suits the season you'll wear it most
- Original stitching and hardware in good condition — a sign of both authenticity and durability
- A fit you won't need to alter significantly, since vintage sizing runs differently than modern denim
